Arrggghhhh.... Yes, that's the sound of frustration for it's the 3rd year in a row that I've missed Chinese New Year (CNY) which falls on 26th Jan (year of the Ox). I've been trying to suppress the memories of how fun the festival is. Infact that's the only festival that I totally love and look forward to especially when I'm a kid.
It's a festival so big and grand, it's celebrated by the entire country and we even have 2 days of national holiday just for this festival. Seriously, this festival is the champion of all festival (we have to multiply 200 times of Christmas just to match 1 CNY) !!!
I recalled buying new clothes inside out and it means right down to your underwear to shoes and new haircut. It's a time when we shop till we drop and our mother will not bat an eyelid, infact your mother will nag at you to buy new clothes to welcome the New Year.
I have to mention the yummy goodies that we'll be stuffing into our mouth from CNY's eve right till everything runs out and that is a long time for the yummy-licious food to run out since we'll stock up like there's no tomorrow. (If you think that Thanks Giving is a day filled with nonstop eating ?? Wait till you see the feast that's presented in every single household).
Wait, there's the perk of it all, the Red packet filled with money !!!! It's like a surprise cause you never know how much you'll going to receive in that red packet or for the entire new year. When you're home and all alone in your room, you'll spread every single red packet in your bed and start unwrapping every single envelope that you can see and start counting the cold hard cash in your hands. The excitement and contented smile on your face when you realised you strike lottery. But that gloat is not over cause when you returned back to school, you start asking each other how much $ they received and then the gloating smile will surface everytime you recalled you've earned yourself the bragging rights. But if you fall behind, no worries cause there's always next year to look forward to.
Now that I'm married, I'm on the other side of the field. I am no longer entitled to receiving the red packet but am distributing the red packet (only the single are entitled to receiving the red packet). Yes, even thought I would be bleeding $ left and right but nothing can beat the 15 glorious days of CNY !!!!
Hopefully, me and Paul can return back to Sing next year where I can show him what CNY is all about.
P/S: I wish every one a properous and happy Chinese New Year !!! =)
